Dimitris Sotakis was born in Athens, Greece, in 1973. In 1997, he makes his first appearance in Greek Letters with the nouvelle “The House”, a short text of the fairy-tale genre, with surreal elements and a kind of singular magic realism. In the autumn of 2002, his second book “The Green Door” is published. The book receives the first enthusiastic reviews.

In 2005, his novel “The Discord” is published which depicts the nightmarish experiences of an amateur musician who is accused of singing out of tune by the conductor of a choir –and finally by society at large-, something which appears to disgrace and scar him for life. The book receives great critical acclaim in the press and is translated into Dutch (De dissonant, Van Gennep Editions) the following year.

In 2007, his fourth novel“The Corn Man”, an allegorical and symbolic text with ironic and occasionally humorous language, is acclaimed by both critics and readers and is nominated at the same time for two major literary prizes, Diavazo Magazine’s Fiction Prize and the Reader’s Prize of the National Book Center of Greece. In 2009, the author returns with his novel “The Miracle of Breathing”, the most widely recognised of his books, which, according to critics, ranks Sotakis among the most influential writers of his generation. The book won the Athens Prize for Literature and portrays the ways in which people manage their lives and the sacrifices they make on a daily basis in expectation of a paradise that will never come. It was nominated for the European Prize for Literature and for the Jean Monnet Prize in France. His latest book “The story of a Super Market” was published in 2015. His books have been translated into French, Turkish, Serbian, Italian, Chinese and Dutch among others.
