Dear Readers,

The “Literature.gr Phrase of the Year Award” was established in December 2015 by Literature.gr, the Greek online literary magazine.

Since literature has always played a prominent role in the field of culture, Literature.gr has established this award, aiming to find ways for the promotion of literature and the engagement of the readers to the modern thinking of Greek and international authors. Taking for granted that within every literary book there is, most of the times, a phrase that can be read autonomously and can still impress the reader, mobilizing new spiritual forces, the purpose of this award is the promotion of those literary quotes which continue to promote this process beyond the reading experience.

Prizes are awarded to the Greek and International authors or poets, whose autonomous phrases reflect this spirit by promoting quality reading experience.

For 2016:

  • Literature.gr Greek Phrase of the Year Prize 2016 is awarded to Mr. Michalis Modinos for the phrase: ‘The year long habit of living makes one unable to face death.’  included in his novel: ”Equatoria”, by Kastaniotis Editions, 2016.

  • Literature.gr Foreign Phrase of the Year Prize 2016 is awarded to Mr. Anthony Marra for the phrase: ‘In what prayer does the last human not die alone?’  included in his book: ”The Tsar of Love and Techno: Stories,” published in the USA, by Hogarth, in 2015 and translated into Greek by Mr. Achilleas Kyriakidis, for Ikaros Editions, 2016

The award ceremony will take place within 2017.

”There are metaphors more real than the people who walk in the street. There are images tucked away in books that live more vividly than many men and women. There are phrases from literary works that have a positively human personality. There are passages from my own writing that chill me with fright, so distinctly do I feel them as people, so sharply outlined do they appear against the walls of my room, at night, in shadows… I’ve written sentences whose sound, read out loud or silently (impossible to hide their sound), can only be of something that acquired absolute exteriority and a full-fledged soul. ”
