The award ceremony of

Literature.gr Phrase of the Year Prize 2016

was successfully held in B&M Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music

on Monday, November 20th, 2017.

The ceremony was attended by publishers, writers, poets, journalists, directors of literary magazines and friends of Literature.gr.

  • Literature.gr Greek Phrase of the Year Prize 2016 is awarded to Mr. Michalis Modinos for the phrase: ‘The year long habit of living makes one unable to face death.’  included in his novel: ”Equatoria”, by Kastaniotis Editions, 2016.
  • Literature.gr Foreign Phrase of the Year Prize 2016 is awarded to Mr. Anthony Marra for the phrase: ‘In what prayer does the last human not die alone?’  included in his book: ”The Tsar of Love and Techno: Stories,” published in the USA, by Hogarth, in 2015 and translated into Greek by Mr. Achilleas Kyriakidis, for Ikaros Editions, 2016

Andreas Mitsou, writer, addressed the evening’s greeting, stating: “Artistic creation and writing become a common act, even with a brief expression of admiration for the creator. Besides, whoever recognizes the other’s miracle, means that it possesses it, brings it in it, so it  familiarizes it and accepts it, it probably reaches it, it cherishes it and it exceeds it “.

Literary critic Lina Pantaleon, among other things, said: “Equatoria, beyond an ideological state, was a concept that made sense in the afterlife. Dominant, for example, is the thought of death, as evidenced by the awarded Phrase: “The year long habit of living makes one unable to face death.” Perhaps the hero wants to trick the uncertainty for a while, because at some point he thinks: “Man can withstand everything except uncertainty.” The anticipation of an idyllic state of existence has proved to be chimaeric, as the incomprehension, intransigence and rivalry that governed human relationships, prevailed.

Dimitris Sotakis writer, presented the book of Anthony Marra, and underlined: “Anthony Marra in the ‘The Tsar of Love and Techno: Stories,’ presents a journey in the History of Russia, from Leningrad in 1937, Siberia in 1999, in Chechnya in 2000 and today’s St. Petersburg. He has created voices that enlightened aspects of Russian life: the deeply rooted sense of fatalism, black humor, disconnection of public and private life, the distrust in institutions larger than family. His heroes are trying to balance into a new reality and are called upon to accept what restricts human behavior and demolishes memory. It is a literary achievement.”

Dina Sarakinoυ, managing dierctor of Literature.gr warmly thanked all the attendees of the evening. She pointed that Literature.gr will remain faithful to its vision and will continue with the same dynamic the promotion of Greek and international literature.

H εκδήλωση απονομής των Λογοτεχνικών Bραβείων

Literature.gr Phrase of the Year Prize 2016
