Literature.gr Translated Phrase of the Year Prize 2015 was awarded to Mr. Philip Kerr and Mrs. Ilaira Dionysopoulou (for the translation of Philip Kerr ‘s phrase)

‘’I always shoot them in the head, and it’s not just because I want to make sure of the job. I think it’s because the head, theirs and mine, is where all the trouble started: theirs and mine. ‘’

which is included in the book: ‘A Philosophical Investigation’, published by Chatto and Windus, in UK, in 1992, by Farrar Straus & Giroux in US, in 1993 and translated into Greek by Mrs. Ilaira Dionisopoulou, on behalf of Kedros Publications.

Philip Kerr interviewed by Kostas Stoforos, following his recent Literature.gr Phrase of the Year Prize 2015 award

How would you comment on the phrase awarded?

I’m very flattered to win anything quite frankly. Delighted that I coined a significant phrase; but much credit must also go to my translator.

Do you have a favorite phrase yourself of a writer that you admire? Or a favorite motto?

I have favourite lines from literature. I much admire P.G. Wodehouse, Raymond Chandler, and F.Scott Fitzgerald. The last line of The Great Gatsby is one of my all time favourites. Check it out.

In my review of the “TRILOGY OF BERLIN: “MARCH VIOLETS”. THE PALE CRIMINAL, A GERMAN REQUIEM”, I stated that “Philip Kerr, although born in Edinburgh in 1956, an author and journalist, records with such a unique way the Berlin atmosphere, almost impossible to believe that he is not -at least- German! ” How do you manage to present with such an extraordinary and unique way that time ?

I did a lot of work, that’s why! A lot of reading and a lot of walking around Berlin. The first time I went there, in 1986, I made the mistake of going in winter. It was freezing. I walked through blizzards in the course of my research. But I was determined. Success is always based on hard work.

In the book “A Philosophical Investigation” you manage to ”transport” the reader so convincingly in a near future, writing a kind of dystopia. Are you a pessimistic?

I don’t feel I am, but my wife thinks I am very negative about a lot of things, and she’s usually right about almost everything, so maybe it’s true. Like most novels that appear to be about the future this one is actually more about the present. In 1984 Orwell is really writing about 1948.

Edinburgh is called “Athens of the North”. Philosophy has particularly grown in your hometown. Some of the most important philosophers derive their origin from Scotland. How has this influenced you?

I read the philosophy of law as a postgraduate. But this had nothing to do with Scotland. Scotland was once a free-thinking place, but no longer. It’s full of nationalists who don’t care to be contradicted or disagreed with. Intellectually it’s a closed shop. Otherwise philosophy has been very important to me. Wittgenstein and Schopenhauer are my two favourites.

In the book “Hand of God, (A Scott Manson Thriller)” I think the image of Greece presented is extremely tense, and you seem to know a lot about football and their “eternal rivals”. Could you tell us about your research? Where or to who was it based;

I like football. I spent a lot of time in Athens and Piraeus researching this book. I don’t need much of an excuse to stay at the Grand Bretagne Hotel, which is one of my favourites.

Is it true that you are writing a Bernie Gunther story that takes place in Greece? Could you reveal to us some details?

Yes. Set in 1957. I can’t say more but it’s informed by the hell that was the German occupation of Greece in 1941.

Πως θα σχολιάζετε τη φράση που βραβεύτηκε;

Ειλικρινά χαίρομαι όταν κερδίζω οποιαδήποτε διάκριση. Είμαι ενθουσιασμένος που επινόησα μια σημαντική φράση, αλλά εύσημα πρέπει να αποδοθούν επίσης στη μεταφράστρια μου.

Έχετε μια αγαπημένη φράση από συγγραφέα που θαυμάζετε; Ή κάποιο μότο;

Έχω αγαπημένες φράσεις από λογοτεχνία. Θαυμάζω πολύ τους Π.Τζ. Γουντχάουζ, Ρέιμοντ Τσάντλερ, και Φράνσις Σκοτ Φιτζέραλντ. Η τελευταία γραμμή από το «Ο Υπέροχος Γκάτσμπι» είναι μία από τις παντοτινά αγαπημένες μου. Αναζητήστε την.

Στην κριτική μου για την «Τριλογία του Βερολίνου είχα γράψει ότι «Αν και γεννημένος στο Εδιμβούργο, το 1956, ο συγγραφέας και δημοσιογράφος καταγράφει με τόσο μοναδικό τρόπο την ατμόσφαιρα του Βερολίνου, που σχεδόν αδυνατείς να πιστέψεις -τουλάχιστον- ότι δεν είναι Γερμανός!» Πώς καταφέρνετε να αποδίδετε με τόσο αυθεντικό τρόπο μια εποχή;

Εργάστηκα πάρα πολύ, γι ‘αυτό! Πολύ διάβασμα και πολύ περπάτημα γύρω από το Βερολίνο. Η πρώτη φορά που πήγα εκεί, το 1986, έκανα το λάθος να πάω χειμώνα. Είχε φοβερό κρύο. Περπάτησα μέσα από χιονοθύελλες κατά τη διάρκεια της έρευνάς μου. Αλλά ήμουν αποφασισμένος. Η επιτυχία βασίζεται πάντα στη σκληρή δουλειά.

Στο βιβλίο σας «Φιλοσοφικά εγκλήματα» μας μεταφέρετε με πειστικότητα σε ένα κοντινό μέλλον, γράφοντας ένα είδος δυστοπίας. Είσαστε απαισιόδοξος;

Εγώ δεν αισθάνομαι ότι είμαι, αλλά η γυναίκα μου πιστεύει ότι είμαι πολύ αρνητικός για πολλά πράγματα, και είναι συνήθως σωστή για τα πάντα σχεδόν, οπότε ίσως να είναι αλήθεια. Όπως τα περισσότερα μυθιστορήματα που φαίνονται να έχουν γραφεί για το μέλλον αυτό είναι στην πραγματικότητα περισσότερο για το παρόν. Στο βιβλίο «1984» ο Όργουελ πραγματικά γράφει για το 1948.

Το Εδιμβούργο αποκαλείται και «Αθήνα του Βορρά». Η φιλοσοφία έχει καλλιεργηθεί ιδιαιτέρως στη γενέθλια πόλη σας. Μερικοί από τους σημαντικότερους φιλόσοφους έλκουν τη καταγωγή τους από τη Σκοτία. Πόσο σας έχει επηρεάσει αυτό;

Σπούδασα φιλοσοφία δικαίου σε μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές. Αλλά αυτό δεν έχει καμία σχέση με την Σκοτία. Η Σκωτία ήταν κάποτε ένας χώρος ελεύθερης σκέψης, αλλά δεν είναι πλέον. Είναι γεμάτη από εθνικιστές οι οποίοι δεν συμπαθούν τις αντιπαραθέσεις και τις διαφωνίες. H διανόηση έχει περιοριστεί πολύ. Κατά τα άλλα η φιλοσοφία είναι πολύ σημαντική για μένα. Ο Βιτγκενστάιν και ο Σοπενχάουερ είναι δύο από τους αγαπημένους μου.

Στο βιβλίο σας «Χέρι του θεού» η εικόνα της Ελλάδας που παρουσιάζετε είναι εξαιρετικά ζοφερή, ενώ φαίνεται να γνωρίζετε πολλά για το ποδόσφαιρο και τους «αιωνίους αντιπάλους». Που βασίστηκε η έρευνά σας;

Μου αρέσει το ποδόσφαιρο. Πέρασα πολύ χρόνο στην Αθήνα και τον Πειραιά κάνοντας έρευνα για αυτό το βιβλίο. Δεν χρειάζομαι κάποιον ιδιαίτερο λόγο για να μείνω στο ξενοδοχείο Μεγάλη Βρετανία, το οποίο είναι ένα από τα αγαπημένα μου.

Είναι αλήθεια πως ετοιμάζετε και μια ιστορία με τον Μπέρνι Γκούντερ που θα διαδραματίζεται στην Ελλάδα; Μπορείτε να μας αποκαλύψετε κάποια στοιχεία;

Ναι. Διαδραματίζεται το 1947. Δεν μπορώ να πω περισσότερα αλλά διαπνέεται από την κόλαση της Γερμανικής κατοχής στην Ελλάδα το 1941.

Philip Kerr was born in Edinburgh and read Law at university. Having learned nothing as an undergraduate lawyer he stayed on as postgraduate and read Law and Philosophy, most of this German, which was when and where he first became interested in German twentieth century history and, in particular, the Nazis. Following university he worked as a copywriter at a number of advertising agencies, including Saatchi & Saatchi, during which time he wrote no advertising slogans of any note. He spent most of his time in advertising researching an idea he’d had for a novel about a Berlin-based policeman, in 1936. And following several trips to Germany – and a great deal of walking around mean streets of Berlin – his first novel, March Violets, was published in 1989 and introduced the world to Bernie Gunther. “I loved Berlin before the wall came down; I’m pretty fond of the place now, but back then it was perhaps the most atmospheric city on earth. Having a dark, not to say black sense of humour myself, it’s always been somewhere I feel very comfortable.” Having left advertising behind, Kerr worked for the London Evening Standard and produced two more novels featuring Bernie Gunther: The Pale Criminal (1990) and A German Requiem (1991). These were published as an omnibus edition, Berlin Noir in 1992.

Thinking he might like to write something else he did and published a host of other novels before returning to Bernie Gunther after a gap of sixteen years, with The One from the Other (2007). Says Kerr, “I never intended to leave such a large gap between Book 3 and Book 4; a lot of other stuff just got in the way; and I feel kind of lucky that people are still as interested in this guy as I am. If anything I’m more interested in him now than I was back in the day.” Two more novels followed, A Quiet Flame (2008) and If the Dead Rise Not (2009). Field Gray is perhaps his most ambitious novel yet that features Bernie Gunther. Crossing a span of more than twenty years, it takes Bernie from Cuba, to New York, to Landsberg Prison in Germany where he vividly describes a story that covers his time in Paris, Toulouse, Minsk, Konigsberg, and his life as a German POW in Soviet Russia.
